I’m a big believer in the saying “age is but a number.” So many times I’ve seen adults do things most people believe to be things a first grader might do. Then there are those times when a 7-year-old seems to know more than most adults we know.
However, in the case of Jordan Powers, an 18-year-old student from California who fell in love with her high school business class teacher, age was a key factor in how things turned out.
Powers’ teacher, 41-year-old James Hooker, claims to have been in love with Powers as well. However questionable that may be, it has never really been the age difference that bothered me in this entire debacle. In fact, it’s been the gargantuan amount of stupididty on Powers’ part.
Like any normal mother, Powers’ mother has been on the war path to ruin Hooker’s entire life and break him and her daughter up from the get-go. Why she thinks she needs to even make much of an effort to ruin Hooker’s life and reputation is beyond me.
When you decide to leave your wife and nearly grown children to play house with your 18-year-old student, I’d say you’ve already got “bad reputation” in the bag.
Just last week, Hooker was arrested on charges that say he allegedly had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student in 1998. Still incarcerated at the time of print, he hasn’t given up on his hopes of sharing a life with Powers.
However, Powers has thrown him to the wolves since his arrest. I guess jail doesn’t quite jive with her “Happily Ever After.”
It’s not the break-up that’s truly made me question the intelligence of Powers. It’s the fact that she’s actually shocked that he’d lie to her about having had relations with a student before, and that he could be so “cold-hearted.”
So what? The fact that he left his wife and children for you wasn’t clue enough that he just might not be the most honest person? The notion that his entire family (children included) have disowned him wasn’t proof enough that he may not have the best moral character?
In the end, I guess what most figured would happen, happened. Girl meets teacher. Teacher seduces girl. Girl thinks teacher actually cares what happens to her. Teacher arrested for having had affair with another student more than a decade before. Girl seemingly crushed by heartlessness of teacher.
Cue the violins.
