The softball team of Texas Wesleyan played their 2013 season opener at Sycamore Park on Feb. 9 with games starting at 11 a.m. against Oklahoma Wesleyan University’s Lady Eagles. Shortly before the game started, the Red River Athletic Conference recognized the 2012 softball team in a ring ceremony for placing first in the conference and winning the conference tournament.

The Lady Rams lost the first game of the morning, 3-5 but won the second game 5-0. The Lady Eagles took a quick lead in the first two innings, and with a walk in the third, the Lady Eagles gained 2 more runs pushing the Lady Rams behind 5-0. The Lady Rams scored their first run in the sixth inning with runs from Kali Jester, junior utility player, and Sara Sandercock, junior utility player. The Lady Rams couldn’t gain a lead and lost 3-5.

Chelsea Boles, junior exercise science and outfielder, said this game was a little tricky.

“The first game was a little awkward and weird since it was our first real game together,” Boles said.

The second game went better for the Lady Rams as Jester and Sandercock earned quick runs for the team along with Alexis Beltran, junior pitcher, and Kylie Sumners, junior third basemen. Wesleyan was up 4-0 in just the first inning.

Beltran gave the Lady Rams one more run before finishing the game with a 5-0 win.

“The second game was better and we turned it around,” Boles said. “We did just fine together.”

The Lady Rams will have their second game of the season in the Cowtown Classic tournament starting Feb. 15 at Gateway Park in Fort Worth, Texas. Wesleyan will play at 9 a.m. against Doane College and then again at 11 a.m. against Graceland College.
