The women’s basketball team at Texas Wesleyan competed in the Red River Athletic Conference tournament over the March 1 weekend. The Lady Rams first played rival team Langston University on Fri. Mar. 1 and won 53-49 in a close battle the whole game. The win advanced them to the semifinals were they fell to Wylie College, 91-70.

The game against LU was a nail-biter throughout the whole game. The Lady Rams stayed within single digits for most of the first half and finishing 28-25 before the second half began. The second half started off hot for LU gaining their biggest lead of the game 36-31. That did not stop the Lady Rams from playing their game. Some key buckets by Kayla McCray, junior post, and Courtney Turner, senior post, gave the Lady Rams a 52-49 lead. Wesleyan scored one more point before the buzzer went off, giving them a shot at the semifinal game against Wiley.

The game against Wiley College was on March 2, and Wiley was ranked number one in the RRAC conference standings. The Lady Rams stayed on top of the Wildcats for most of the first half until the Wildcats went on a scoring run, gaining a double digit lead before the half was over. Andre’a Davis, senior guard, went out on top with a career high 19 points and Toieasha Cooper, junior forward, brought 17 points to the game. Davis also lead the team with seven assists and eight boards.

Davis said the team showed a lot of heart this tournament.

“We should a bunch of character  by preserving until the end,” Davis said. “We went into the tournament short one player and in the first game we lost another one.”

Davis is now finished with basketball but won’t forget the amazing season she had.

“We had every reason to give up but we fought until the very end and gave it our all,” Davis said. “It was a total team effot and I am beyond proud of the way we represent Texas Wesleyan basketball.”
