The Texas Wesleyan men’s basketball team played over the weekend of March 1 in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. The Rams started their bracket playing Our Lady of the Lake University Mar.1 and beat them 101-92 and advanced to the semifinals of the tournament.
The next game was played against Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Mar.2 and fell to them knocking the Rams out of the conference tourney, 98-83.
In the first game against OLLU, the Rams held a strong eight point lead until the Saints fired back with a 17-3 run. The Lions and the Rams went back and forth for the remaining of the half but the Saints gained the one point lead by the end of the first half, 41-40. In the second half, Dallas Jones, junior guard, and Kyle Preston, sophomore guard, helped gain a ten point led with just a little more than 6 minutes to play in the game. Although the game was fought close, the Rams pulled off the nine point win.
Oscar Griffin, senior guard, had 12 points for the night. Jones added 21 and Isaiah Jay, junior forward, put 16 points on the board for the Rams. Winning this game put the Rams in the semifinal round and played against SAGU Mar. 2.
The Rams were playing against the number one team in the RRAC but that did not stop Griffin from scoring a career-high 40 points in the game and adding 9 rebounds, close to having another double-double for the season. Jones added 10 points and Jazz Holman, junior guard, added 10 as well.
Brian Talley, senior guard, said the team played with heart.
“I feel we played hard and gave it our all but just came up short in the end,” Talley said.
The Rams fell short to SAGU, 101-92 finishing their season 20-12 overall and 12-10 in conference. The players will take a week or two off before beginning off-season practice for next season.
