Rams Up! to the start of homecoming week

It’s football season and Texas Wesleyan’s Homecoming Week is back.

The week of events starts Monday and goes through Saturday, when the Rams take on the Lyon College Scots at Farrington Field at 2 p.m.

Assistant Director for Student Engagement Barbara Barnhart wrote in an email that this year’s Homecoming Week will be an investment from the Office of Student Engagement, Student Government Association (SGA), and the Programming and Activities Committee (PAC).

Barnhart wrote that some of the homecoming events have changed from last year.

“Adjustments were made based on feedback and success we found through various events last year,” Barnhart wrote.

Barnhart wrote that the majority of the events are the same as last year but Deck Out Campus has been removed and Midnight Breakfast has been added to the homecoming tradition.

“Midnight breakfast was such a hit from PAC last year when they did it in the late fall that they wanted it to become a homecoming tradition,” Barnhart wrote.

SGA is bringing back one of Wesleyan’s old traditions, the Talent Show, and adding it to Homecoming Week.

“SGA was excited about hosting a Talent show so we reshaped Taco ’bout a Lip-sync into a campus-wide talent show that allowed a variety of talent,” Barnhart wrote.

SGA Secretary Alison Baron said the organization is trying to make Homecoming Week more student-based this year.

Baron said the Ram Rally will be in the Sid Richardson gym at 7 p.m. Monday.

“That’s also where the homecoming court is going to be officially announced,” Baron said.

More information on the Freshman Photo at IM Field at noon on Thursday was sent to the freshmen, Baron said.

Baron said the Thursday and Friday events are hosted by SGA; these include the Block Party and the Talent Show.

SGA has contacted the Wesleyan cheer team and the Gold Line dancers to perform at the Block Party, she said. The football team will also be helping with the grilling.

“Just getting as much Wesleyan in as possible. Last year there was a lot of outside food trucks, and outside DJs and this year, we’re focusing on making it more student-based,” Baron said.

There are a lot of events for the alumni but the more student-based events are the Wesleyan 5K at 9 a.m. Saturday and the Homecoming Game at Farrington Field at 2 p.m. Saturday, Baron said.

Baron said the Ram Zone will be happening before the game starts.

Greek Life, the two local fraternity and sororities, will also be hosting a raffle, she said.

“LKK [Lambda Tau Zeta] and LTZ [Lambda Kappa Kappa], they’re doing a raffle and that’s going to be announced during halftime and so are the king and queen,” Baron said.

Baron said with the creation of the football team, Homecoming Week is trying to be a bigger event.

“Get people to come to the games, get people to be involved with homecoming,” Baron said. “We know we’re not a huge university but we want that involvement.”
