Campus Safety and Security has ramped up enforcement of the new campus-wide parking policy—which includes an annual $100 fee for students.
Gary Stout, dean of students, said the policy aims to reduce the ‘strain’ on surrounding residents caused by students parking in nearby neighborhoods. Stout also said the funds will finance improvements towards campus parking lots, security and safety. Specifically, Lot E saw investment with the building of security, lights and 100 new parking spots.
Stout said the new parking fee will also fund future improvements such as asphalt repairs, increased lighting, painting of parking lots, and enhancements such as security fencing, sidewalks and camera systems.
An email from Chris Beckrich, director of safety and security, confirmed that enforcement began Sept. 1 through citations and towing. Beginning September 22, booting became a part of the enforcement policy.
900 students have purchased parking permits—equivalent to $90,000 in funds. Stout said that prior citations will be waived for students once a permit is purchased.
Student reaction to the new policy has been mixed.
“For a lot of students, paying that $100 fee came out of nowhere,” SGA president and junior religion and business major Daylan Anderson Harris said.
Harris continued, “At first, I was kind of upset. I feel more comfortable now knowing where my money is being spent,” citing a meeting he had with administration concerning the new policy.
Senior education major Alyssa Eichele welcomed potential improvements brought by the new policy.
“Our parking lots need a lot of work, so I definitely think it’s a good thing that that’s where the money is going towards,” she said.
Some students, such as senior psychology major Johny Tu Phan, suggested that student input should be considered by the administration before decisions like these are made.
“I think as a student it’s good for us to have a voice in the school community so that we don’t feel like we’re unheard,” Phan said.
The parking fee will be yearly and will remain in effect for the foreseeable future.
