Sororities Zeta Phi Beta and Lambda Theta Alpha are returning to campus, while Alpha Kappa Alpha is looking to establish a chapter at Texas Wesleyan for the spring 2026 semester.  

Greek life has been absent from campus for over five years. Lambda Theta Alpha went inactive in 2020 while Zeta Phi Beta became dormant in 2010, later trying to reestablish a chapter in 2019. 

Bertie Gardner, assistant director of student activities and engagement, says his role is to help spread the word as the sororities establish themselves on campus.  

“I think the reintroduction of these groups serves to add another layer to complement student life,” Gardner said. 

Area Recruitment and Retention Coordinator for Lambda Theta Alpha Elizabeth Gonzalez shared her excitement for the return of Greek life at TxWes.  

“COVID kind of killed it for a little bit, and then seeing it grow back and seeing the need that people have for a sisterhood or a brotherhood is amazing,” Gonzalez said.  

Evenn Head, Texas Wesleyan junior criminal justice major and a member of Omega Psi Phi at Texas Christian University, one of the Divine Nine, a collective of the largest Black fraternities and sororities, spoke about how Greek life impacts the campus community.  

“It brings people outside of their dorms, brings people from just staying inside all day, coming and getting more involved in their community, seeing what all the different values and thoughts and feelings that all the different fraternities and sororities have,” Head said. 

However, Greek life offers more than just community on campus, Gonzalez shared just how far bonds created within Greek life can go.  

“Our sisters travel far and wide to see each other, and I think having relationships, not just on one campus, but another, not only helps build bonds and friendships, but it also helps build community,” Gonzalez said.  

Head spoke to the brotherhood that Greek life has brought him.  

“It’s given me brothers that I know that I could count on for the rest of my life, and not just my chapter, but just everybody” Head said.  

Head also spoke to the personal growth and values that Greek life has instilled in him.

“I knew who I was before, and so joining the fraternity, it basically just elevated me. And it’s pushed me in a whole bunch of ways to be better” Head said, “teaching me like minor things like how to tie your tie, how to come professional, how to speak… that is a very huge way that the fraternity has helped me in my real world life experiences.” 

Gonzalez similarly believes that sisterhood is not only about the community growth that it fosters, but the  personal growth as well.  

“I didn’t see myself as enough as a woman, and they brought that to me, not only that, but they brought sisterhood to a whole different level” Gonzalez said, “Lambda Theta Alpha hopes to bring a safe space for everyone,” 

As Greek life returns to Texas Wesleyan, Gardner worries the smaller campus may bring difficulties with other Greek life organizations down the line.  

“I think our size might be a little bit of a barrier to some of them, cause some of these organizations, they do require a certain number of members in order to really establish a chapter,” Gardner said, “So, we honestly could run into the issue of there’s not enough students to support as many chapters as there are,” 

Still, Gardner is ready for the change that Greek life will bring to campus.  

“I think we’ll start to see different activities happening on campus, an increase in activities, and just more ways for our student orgs to collaborate with each other.” Gardner said.  

Head spoke about the lifelong sense of family his fraternity, Omega Psi Psi, has exposed him to when asked about the value of Greek life.  

“See, this fraternity is not, it’s not just a college thing. This fraternity goes on for life,” Head said.
