The Texas Wesleyan women’s flag football team defeated Schreiner University 33-0 at the Karen Cramer Stadium in their inaugural home game on March 29.
Being Texas’s first varsity women’s flag football team, the Rams had a lot of pressure on them.
The game started with a strong offensive push as healthcare administration graduate student Mikaela Nunez scored the first touchdown.
“It feels great, being a trailblazer, especially for this program. It was very nerve-wracking, but it was good,” Nunez said.
Nunez, who was on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, talked about how she felt after the game.
“I’m tired. I’m playing both sides of the ball. I’m ready to go take an Epsom salt bath and just relax after this game,” Nunez said.
The energy was high going into the end of the first half as the team had a good overall performance. Things took a turn shortly when Schreiner University intercepted the ball; however, the TxWes defense kept Schreiner from capitalizing.
Going into the third quarter, the Rams kept their momentum rolling Ti’yanna Johnson intercepted a pass from Schreiner University at the 30 and returned it to the 10-yard line.

This set up junior quarterback Destinee Hernandez, a sports communication major, to pass the ball to Johnson for a 2-yard touchdown. Going into the fourth quarter, TxWes was up 20-0.
The final quarter was the highest-scoring period with Ariel Duran intercepting a pass at Schreiner’s 10-yard line and scoring a touchdown. Duran went on to intercept the ball again, returning it to Schreiner’s 5-yard line. The game ended with Duran rushing for a 5-yard touchdown and Hernandez getting the extra point.
Rams head coach Keenah Lambert described the win as vindicating.
“When you put something together like this—when it’s your first time, when you build it up from scratch, you question yourself? Like, ‘is this right? Am I building the right culture? Am I putting the right people together?’” Lambert said. “Then to see it unfold like this, I can’t ask for anything else.”
The Rams go on the road as they travel to Winfield, KS to take on Southwestern (KS) on Wednesday, April 1, at 3:30 p.m.
