Update 1/26 10:29 a.m.
Per a campus-wide email sent by Dean of Students Dr. Gary Stout on Monday, Jan. 26 at 8:55 p.m., campus will remain closed and classes will remain virtual for Tuesday, Jan. 27. Stout described the decision as, “out of an abundance of caution.”
The extreme cold warning issued by the National Weather Service will end on Tuesday at 9 a.m. Black ice is expected to cause dangerous road conditions into Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to go above freezing by Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
On Saturday, Jan. 24, Dean of Students Dr. Gary Stout sent a campus-wide email announcing that the campus will remain closed and classes will be moved virtual on Monday, Jan. 26.
Stout cited unsafe road conditions as the main deciding factor and urged students to communicate directly with professors if any technology issues arise.
“Your safety remains our highest priority,” Stout stated in the email.
Many students welcomed the decision.
“I’m glad we don’t have school,” sophomore history major John Rector said. “It’s great for the commuter students because they don’t have to drive on the icy roads, and Texas [drivers] probably don’t know how to drive on these kinds of roads.”
Rector, who spent time living in Michigan, welcomed the familiar weather.
“This a cool day in Michigan,” Rector said. “Everybody would be going to school around this time.”
Other students recalled the last winter storm, January 2025, disliking when classes remained in-person.
“I remember last year it was snowing, and we still had classes,” sophomore computer science major Malcolm Haven said. “That wasn’t it.”
