On Feb. 19, the Latinx Student Association (LSA) will host a discussion on immigration law.
Update 3/3
The event was postponed due to severe weather and has been rescheduled to Thursday, March 6.
Guest speaker and Texas Wesleyan alumna Rosa Maria Berdeja will provide students with valuable insights their rights. The event will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the McFadden Science Center Science Lecture Theater (MCF 111).
This event offers an opportunity for both documented and undocumented immigrants to seek professional information and legal advice to navigate the current political climate. All students, staff and faculty are invited to attend.
Carla Salazar, senior mass communication major and President of LSA, felt it was her responsibility to provide Latinx students with essential information on navigating situations such as workplace raids, detentions, deportations and safe protesting practices.
“There were students messaging me, saying that LSA needed to do something,” Salazar said. “What is happening in the world is affecting my community. I knew I needed to do something about this as president.”
Senior history major Cesar Espino, a first-generation American and former intern with the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), shared his thoughts on how the event will impact students.
“What LSA is doing is crucial for not just having a voice, but starting something,” Espino said. “Seeing grassroots efforts like LSA is doing is crucial… this is a step in the right direction.”
Sophomore criminal justice major Angie Aguilera saw the event on LSA’s social media and plans to attend to find out more information for her loved ones.
“I will definitely be in attendance to learn more about what I can do to help my friends and family,” Aguilera said. “There are many people on campus that I know would benefit from an event like this.”
