SGA votes to fund events for Financial Literacy Month

The Student Government Association voted Monday to fund four events for national Financial Literacy Month in April.

According to the Financial Literacy Month Events bill, the Finance and Audit Committee will host the events, which are scheduled to take place April 6, 12, 20 and 25.

The SGA allocated a total of about $350 for the four events: “Spin and Win” on April 6 at 5 p.m., “Ballin’ on a Budget” on April 12 at 12 p.m., “Around the World” on April 20 at 12 p.m., and “How to be an Adult 101” on April 25 at 7 p.m.

“The ‘Spin and Win’ event will be in the Armstrong-Mabee Business Center and cater more to evening students,” School of Education Representative Lizeth Menchaca said. “They’ll answer a question and win a prize.”

“Ballin on Budget” will teach students how to maximize their money, while “Around the World” will teach students about different cultures’ currencies, Menchaca said.

“Treasurer Bessinger came up with the “Around the World” event, and I thought it was a really neat idea,” Menchaca said. “It will allow us to have a connection without our international student body, which is a very large percentage here at Wesleyan.”

“How to be an Adult 101” will cover topics such as interest, buying a car, and building credit, Menchaca said.

The SGA also focused on connecting with the senior student body by voting to fund the Senior Toast, an informal event designated for graduating seniors to celebrate their successes.

According to the Senior Toast Bill, the event will take place May 4 from 5:30 p.m. – 7p.m. at Blue Mesa Grill.

“Graduating seniors will feel appreciated, which could potentially lead to alma mater donations and stronger alumni relations,” Senior Class Representative Stuart Tenney said.

The SGA allocated $1,200 for the Senior Toast, which will cover food, drink tickets, a senior gift, and decorations.

“We’re excited for our graduating seniors,” President Abbey Borghee said.
