The Eunice and James L. West Library and Student Life hosted their annual game night Thursday evening on the first floor in the library.

“For the past two years we have been doing this every semester,” said digital initiative librarian Caitlin Rookey. “We used to just do international game day which is on April 28, but now we do table top game day which is specifically for board games.”  

According to ilovelibraries.org, the event originated from a joint initiative between the American Library Association, the Australian Library and Information Association, and Nordic Game Day to connect communities around games. 

“International game day is a nationally recognized day where people come together to celebrate the comradery of playing board games,” said Elsa Torres, a circulation desk assistant. 

While international game day is typically hosted by libraries, Student Life has been hosting their own weekly game nights throughout the semester. 

“Student Life has a weekly game night, but tonight was an event where Student Life and the library joined forces to have one big game night,” Rookey said. 

“We are just a group of students who love to get together and have fun playing board games,” said English major Victoria Vra’Zamora. “We play a big range of games from Cards Against Humanity, Uno, and Betrayal, all the way to Dungeons and Dragons. We even have a group that meets up specifically to play Dungeons and Dragons.” 

While Vra’Zamora enjoys playing the games at game night, she also enjoys the movie screening. 

“What’s awesome about game night is that we don’t only play games. We also have movie screenings for people who don’t want to play games the whole time. The movie tonight is the original Jumanji. There is also tons of free popcorn and cold drinks. Who would want to miss out on that?” 

Vra’Zamora said a lot of the board gamers are actually a part of the Nerd Central club on campus. 

“A lot of us are (a part of a) club called Nerd Central, where the group gets together regularly and plays several different games and also watches movies. It’s a great group to join if you want to meet new people and have fun.”  

Vra’Zomora said that the goal of the group is to let students have a place to let out their inner geek.

“Nerd Central’s organizational statement is to provide an environment for like-minded individuals to share their interests and ideas pertaining to the geek and nerd subculture,” Vra’Zomora said. “If you got that inner geek or nerd in you that you want to share with other like-minded geeks and nerds, come to the haven of geeks and nerds: Nerd Central!”
