The Eunice & James L. West Library celebrated its 30^th birthday Thursday with cake, singing, and lots of free supplies.

The library staff served two birthdays cakes, gave out T-shirts to students and faculty who sang happy birthday to the library and also gave out keychains, pens, and lanyards to people who came to celebrate with them.

The library opened Oct. 21, 1988, according to txwes.edu.

Students like senior criminal justice major Ted Maxie stopped by the library to celebrate the milestone by participating in games and wearing library T-shirts to show his support.

Maxie said the library has played an essential role in his college experience at Wesleyan; it’s always served as a quiet place for him to get homework and other assignments completed on time.

“Usually other places that you go to on campus are noisy, but here it’s so quiet you have time to get work done in a relaxing environment,” Maxie said.

Senior sociology major Shanice Evans said she enjoyed the celebration with the library staff because the library is a place on campus where she spends a lot of her time.

Evans also said she has great friends who work on the library staff and they always keep her informed about events like this

“This celebration is great. We attend a small school, and so events like this are awesome for bringing people together,” Evans said. “I spent a lot of time in the library, plus I have friends who always keep me up to date on events going on in the library.”

Senior English with secondary certification major Josie Tharp attended the celebration after seeing flyers around campus promoting the events and friends who work at the library.

Tharp said the library has always been a big enough space where she and her fronds go on daily basis, whether it’s to play board game on the first floor or study on the third floor and use technology on the second floor.

“What I like is that the library space is big enough for students like my friends and me to come and do a variety of actives like play board games or study upstairs,” Tharp said. ”The third floor is going for relaxing; the second floor is great for any technology things you want to do, and the first floor is good for any community activities with friends or a large group.”
