The Student Government Association passed one bill at Tuesday’s meeting.
The Wesleyan 5K Bill allocates $450 for the first 30 student runners to participate for free. The event is Oct. 19.
The original bill allocated $500 for the first 50 runners; it was amended to $450 after discussion about the number of free tickets.
Associate Director of Alumni Relations Christian Garcia said this is the fourth annual Wesleyan 5K and the university is looking to get support from SGA to register for the race.
“We went through our budget and we spend way more than $10 a person, it’s more like $23,” Garcia said. “So, if possible, we’d like to get $15 a student. If not, we’ll just take the $500 for 50 registrations.”
SGA Head Representative Kierra Glover then asked if lowering the amount of tickets will be better for now.
“So is there a way we can minimize the cost where it would be around $500?” Glover asked.
Garcia said she agreed with Glover.
“Right, so you could like 30 or 33 registrations if you wanted to do that, yeah,” she said. “And then after the 33 students run out then we could do Texas Wesleyan students sign up for $15 to kind of offset some of that cost so that they don’t have to pay $25 or the $35 if you wanted to.”
The meeting continued with SGA Vice President Karen Duarte-Escobar presenting a letter welcoming students to Wesleyan and letting them know how they can get in contact with SGA and their resources.
“This is just something I thought of to give points to students as well as our contact information through social media, email, and just coming to our meetings in general,” Duarte-Escobar said. “I’m just trying to make it happy and encouraging for students to get involved.”
SGA President Alyssa Hutchinson mentioned that Education Representative Emma Tracy has left her position to focus on school. This leaves the position empty. She told members to spread the word that there is an open position.
Hutchinson also added there will not be a meeting next Tuesday because of the Nick and Lou Martin University Center Dedication Ceremony, which is 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. For more information on the Wesleyan 5K, go to txwes.edu.
