The air conditioning system in Stella Hall malfunctioned causing the residents to go without cool air for four days starting Aug. 29.
Junior bilingual education major Laisha Gaytan is a member of Texas Wesleyan’s Goldline dance team. She stated that after morning practice she spends time in the hall’s common area.
“I walked in from the hot air outside and couldn’t even tell a difference in the temperature,” she said.
The temperature was 98 degrees on Aug. 29 according to AccuWeather.
A study done by economists R. Jisung Park and Joshua Goodman demonstrated that students tend to perform worse academically when they’re hot.
“I try to get some studying before my classes start for the day, but it was so hot I couldn’t focus,” Gaytan said.
First-year student Keaton Wilson, a criminal justice major, had his concerns about the heat as well. He stated that conditions on the first floor were almost unbearable.
Wilson said, “You couldn’t even be down there. It was too hot.”
Though some students understood that the incident was out of the school’s control, their frustration stemmed from a lack of communication on the matter.
“Things like this happen,” said first-year student Duaine Harris, a criminal justice major. “I just wish they had better communication.”
Texas Wesleyan has since fixed the issue and the AC is now running in Stella Hall.
