Texas Wesleyan University’s Career Services hosted an Internship Checklist Event that started on Aug. 19, providing students with guidance on securing internships and navigating the competitive application process.
Jesse Albracht, director of Employer Relations and Student Readiness, organized the event, which was designed to help students prepare for internships and future career opportunities.
“We wanted to provide this event as an educational tool for students,” Albracht said. “One thing that has come up from students, faculty and employers alike is that many students don’t realize how early they can start applying for internships or that they can participate in multiple internships.”
The event focused on teaching students the importance of beginning their internship search early and understanding the resources available to them. Albracht emphasized that students should take advantage of platforms like Handshake and LinkedIn to search for opportunities and submit applications.
“Students often don’t realize they can begin applying for internships as early as they want,” she said. “Platforms like Handshake and LinkedIn provide excellent resources to help them find opportunities, and we want to make sure they know how to use them effectively in their search.”
In addition to discussing platforms, Albracht highlighted the significance of preparing application materials, such as resumes and cover letters, and practicing interview skills.
“We don’t place students in internships, but we educate and equip them to search for those internships and apply,” she said. “This event helps students know exactly what they need to do when they’re ready to start the application process.”
The presentation drew a diverse group of attendees, including sophomore Angela Lopez, an accounting major, who appreciated learning about new internship platforms.
“I didn’t know about Handshake before, but now I do,” Lopez said. “This event definitely helped me find out where to look for internships around here.”
Lopez also suggested improvements for future events, including more promotional efforts and possibly adding food to attract more participants.
“Maybe having more flyers around campus would help,” she said.
Criminal Justice sophomore Matte Fry also attended the event, motivated by her interest in securing internships that would benefit her career path.
“I care about my opportunities and want the best outcome for me,” Fry said. “This event met my expectations and helped me understand how to apply for internships.”
Fry and Lopez both said the event gave them valuable insights into the internship process and resources available to help them along the way.
“It definitely helped me find out about specific websites and apps where I could look for internships around here,” Lopez said
Albracht stressed that Career Services is available to guide students year-round, offering workshops, one-on-one appointments, and resume reviews to prepare students for their internships.
“In addition to events like this, we also help students practice interview skills and host career fairs,” Albracht said. “Our mission is to prepare students for their next steps after graduation, which includes making sure they are equipped and educated on how to conduct an internship search and apply for those opportunities.”
Looking ahead, Albracht plans to continue offering similar presentations throughout the academic year, addressing topics such as office etiquette and networking skills.
“We want students to feel confident in their ability to search for and secure internships,” she said. “We’re here to help every step of the way.”
