After Tuesday’s faculty/staff vs students’ basketball game was cancelled because the campus was closed, 2015’s homecoming festivities got under way Wednesday with Blue and Gold Day.
The day gives prospective students a chance to check out Texas Wesleyan, get a feel for life on campus, and ask any questions they may have.
Senior biology major and tour guide Morgan Kirkpatrick likes showing off the campus because it is a way to bring visitors together, and give them a community atmosphere like the atmosphere on campus.
“It’s a really fun event,” Kirkpatrick said. “I love helping out with campus, trying to get more students here, and being involved as much as possible.”
Trent Sandles, Wesleyan’s campus visit coordinator, said that typically groups of between 35 and 40 prospective students check out the campus.
“Blue and Gold Day is one of the preview days we have here on campus, for prospective students and their parents to come,” Sandles said. “Our preview days are on Saturdays, so that way the parents and students can get any questions they have about campus answered.”
Student Government Association President Tyler Mendez said that, while Blue and Gold Day is great for prospective students, it is also a way to enhance the Wesleyan tradition.
“My freshman year we didn’t really have any well practiced traditions,” Mendez said. “But with Midnight Madness, and Blue and Gold Day, it’s a way where we can get our spirit out there.
“When you think blue and gold, we want students to think of Wesleyan, and maybe when they go to UNT, or SFA to visit friends or whatever, and they mention blue and gold, we want them to think Wesleyan.”
Homecoming continues Thursday, with the Homecoming Spirit Door contest. Students can go to the Student Project Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to vote for their favorite door and for the Residence Life spirit banner competition. Also, voting links for the homecoming court will be emailed to all students, according to an email sent out to students by Dean of Students Dennis Hall.
