Student Government Association presidential candidate Abbey Borghee said Tuesday that her focus next semester will not be on sustaining current projects rather than creating new ones
Borghee, who is running unopposed for the position, spoke on Tuesday afternoon at a debate for SGA candidates at the Baker Building.
“What I want to focus on next year, is not coming up with new ideas, but focus on what the previous presidents have done and make sure they are taken care of,” said Borghee, who is currently SGA’s vice president. “I want to make sure the fire pit and the student lounge are taken care of and I want to keep the participation plan going.”
The three students running for vice president spoke on a variety of issues, including the new intramural field, building the Wesleyan community and parking. Each candidate was asked to respond to multiple questions.
Representative at Large Lyndsey Bessinger presented her platform, PINK, which stands for People in Need of Community.
“I’m all about building community,” Bessinger said. “The intramural field is the perfect way to build community if we can get some better seating so that a lot of people can come and watch and participate together.”
Representative at Large Zurra Hemani said that if she were vice president she would make sure the international prayer room finds a permanent home.
“To cater to our large international student population, I want to make sure that the prayer room is accessible and easy to find for all students,” Hemani said. “This will also establish a sense of connectivity between international resident students and international commuter students.”
Freshmen Student Representative Zahraa Saheb addressed the issues about parking.
“As a university we have more students than professors so we should have more parking for students than we do for professors, which we don’t,” Saheb said. “Students are having to park off campus and are having problems with theft, so one way to address this is too reallocate more parking for students after construction has finished on campus.”
Dean of Students Dennis Hall sent a link to all students on Wednesday for voting. Voting ends at 10 p.m. Thursday. The SGA Executive Council will be announced on Friday, and the president will be sworn in on April 28.
