Alumni Relations continues tradition with Theatre Wesleyan

Texas Wesleyan’s Alumni Reunion will be April 19 through April 21, with multiple events for alumni to attend, including Theatre Wesleyan’s production of the musical “Oklahoma!”

Written in 1943 by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, “Oklahoma!” is a love story between Curly, a cowboy, and Laurey, a farm girl.

Director of Alumni Relations DeAwna Wood said that every year the Theatre Department puts on the spring musical and alumni attend as a part of their alumni reunion.

“The Saturday night of the spring musical has always been alumni night,” Wood said, “so several years back when they started the reunion it became one of the cornerstone events.”

Alumni Lu’Anne Dowler Morrison, a 1981 graduate, attends most of the alumni reunion events and thinks they always impress.

“The events are always great! The turnouts are really good, but I (wish) even more alumni could make it to the events.” Morrison said. “It’s nice seeing familiar faces again.”

Morrison also mentioned the importance of alumni reunion for the alumni.

“Everyone can’t make it to all of the events, but the alumni reunion is the big one. Everyone goes to the alumni reunion.” Morrison said. “I can’t wait!”

Theatre Department business manager Jacob Sanchez is also excited to see the alumni at the reunion.

Sanchez graduated from Wesleyan in 2015 and became the business manager the same year.

“It’s great seeing what everyone has been up to.” Sanchez said. “Most of the people I worked with are working in theatre in some capacity and come back for the reunion.”

Wood is happy to know that Alumni Relations events continue to keep alumni connected.

“The bottom line goal is alumni engagement. We want to provide opportunities for alumni to connect with each other and re-engage with the campus.” Wood said.

“Oklahoma!” will be performed April 19 through April 22 at the W.E. Scott Theatre in Fort Worth.

This year “Oklahoma!” celebrates its 75th anniversary, so it’s a big year for the production, Wood said.

“It’s a classic musical.” Wood said. “If you’re into musicals or Broadway shows at all, ‘Oklahoma!’ is a classic to see.”
