Several Texas Wesleyan athletes have been given awards from the Sooner Athletic Conference, and Makenna Aycock has added a pretty large title to her list.

Aycock, a junior with an undecided major, was named SAC Pitcher of the Week and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Pitcher of the Week for April 2-8, according to naia.org. Her record is 10-3 with a 3.87 ERA, according to ramsports.net.

Aycock said that it was an exciting moment to get those two awards.

“It was an honor being named National Pitcher of the Week and having all of the hard work that I’ve put in get recognized,” Aycock said. “These were the first two awards that I have received this season, and to have won them both in the same week was incredible.”

Aycock said the season has gone well and the team only has four games left before the SAC conference tournament begins on May 3. The team is 36-16 and 20-8 in the conference, according to ramsports.net.

“Our season is going pretty good, we are sitting third in the conference right now,” Aycock said.

Aycock said her goal for the end of the season is to compete at nationals.

“My personal goal for the rest of the season is just to help lead my team to the national tournament,” Aycock said. “I believe that we have the talent to get there.”

Savannah Brixey, a sophomore business management major, said Aycock has a lot of dedication.

“She has so much dedication towards pitching and is always working to get better every day,” Brixey said.

Brixey said that she is also a good teammate and a reliable player.

“I would also say she is so much fun to be around and she is so confident when she is pitching for us during the game,” Aycock said.

Aycock said the reason the team is so successful is because they trust one another.

“I trust my defense to make the plays behind me and I trust my offense to produce the runs we need to win ball games,” Aycock said. “My defense trusts me to make the good pitches to get them the ground balls and pop ups that they need to make the outs.”

Aycock said that trust is something that has to be earned.

Demi Dotson, a senior psychology major, said Aycock is a hard worker.

“Ken is definitely someone who knows how to hold her own, she works hard every day, and holds herself accountable,” Dotson said.

Dotson said that she has confidence in Aycock when she is pitching.

“I know when she’s in the circle she is going to take care of business and keep up in a tight ball game,” Dotson said.

Aycock said her biggest goal when she transferred to Texas Wesleyan from Hill College was earning the trust of her teammates and coaches.

“I think I’ve accomplished it pretty well,” she said.

Aycock said she has had a good season as well.

“I have gotten to throw a lot of innings and I have kept my ERA pretty low throughout the season, which was also one of my goals,” Aycock said. “I feel as though I have been doing my job on the mound successfully.”

Aycock said she hopes the success from this season gives her confidence for next season.

“I’m hoping to see my progress from this season give me even more of an edge next year,” Aycock said. “I’m getting stronger with the more innings that I throw, so if I keep the progress going I will be even stronger next season than I am now.”

The Lady Rams will play a doubleheader against Central Christian College on Friday in Sycamore Park. The first game starts at 2 p.m. For more information, go to ramsports.net.
