Texas Wesleyan football players are gearing up for their first away game of the season.

Head coach Joe Prud’homme wrote in an e-mail that he has a plan in mind for how the team can improve this weekend after last Saturday’s 42-7 loss to Kansas Wesleyan University.

“We can’t turn the ball over, give up big plays and commit penalties and expect to be successful,” Prud’homme wrote. “We will make some adjustments that should give us an opportunity to convert better on offense.  We will stick with our practice routine and will prepare for a very hostile environment.”

The game is 7 p.m. Saturday against the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas in Kingsville. The Javelinas are 0-1 this season after losing to Texas A&M Commerce 37-36 last Saturday. They were 4-7 last season.

Rams quarterback Donovan Isom was injured Saturday and missed most of the game. Prud’homme wrote that he is unsure what this means for this week’s game.

“Donovan will probably not play this weekend,” Prud’homme wrote.  “I can’t discuss his specific injury, but if he can’t play then Avery Childs will get the start. I thought both QBs played well this past game.”

Childs wrote in an e-mail that he thinks the Javelinas are going to be tough, but beatable.

“We had a balanced attack on offense last week,” Childs wrote.  “We are looking to keep building on the success of the run game and the air game. We have a great attitude and ready to attack practice to prepare for this week’s opponent.”

Rams quarterback Justin Arth wrote in an e-mail that he is optimistic about the team’s chances and is looking forward to the game.

“After Saturday the team’s morale is still high,” wrote Arth, a sophomore business administration major. “We know of the mistakes we made, how to fix it and we also know of the great things we did and how to make that more consistent. We know we are a great team but we have to continue to improve on the little things and keeping penalties down.

“If we do that, the scores on the field will drastically improve. Our preparation and consistency has been solid and those are huge things that we must continue to build on to be successful on the field. Texas A&M-Kingsville is a great football team and we must bring our A-game to take down those guys but I am more than confident in our team to do that on Saturday.”
