The Texas Wesleyan women’s tennis team won Tuesday with a 5-1 victory at Southwestern College.
Head coach Angel Martinez was happy with the way his team performed at the match and told them that he is not results oriented.
“I’m more concerned about how we compete, how we grow as a team, grow our game, and how we compete each and every time we come off the court,” Martinez said.
The Lady Rams began with a match at Cowley Community College. The Rams took 5 wins including, Murchland defeating Bruna Chavez in No. 1 singles, Amy Leiu topping Eva Forneiron in No. 2 singles, and Katy Foster defeating Kasey Coker in No. 3 singles.
In the doubles matches, Foster/Leiu defeated Chavez/Forneiron 8-5, and Murchland/ Mentesana defeated Stormi Tipton/Peyton Adams 8-2, according to ramsports.net.
In addition, the Lady Rams swept their doubles match against Southwestern College. Katy Foster/Amy Leiu defeated Morgan Hughes/Anna Mankoski 8-1. Emily Murchland/Alexa Mentesana defeated Savannah Pfau/Sydney Shields 8-5. Laura Grunden/Emily Rodriguez defeated Sadie Pfau/ Nya Cheatham 9-7, according to ramsports.net.
Freshman Ashton Willis said it made them feel good to come out with a victory.
“It gave us a lot of confidence and it showed how we can compete with the other teams,” Willis said.
Freshman Maggie Brasher shared the same excitement as the rest of her teammates.
“We won and put a statement out there for other teams,” Brasher said. “Just letting them know that we’re back and we set a really high standard for ourselves, it felt good.”
Martinez said one thing he wants to continue to see out of his team is growth.
“If we lose and we play well, I’m fine with that,” Martinez said. “I also want us to act right and act professional on the court.”
The Lady Rams will return to the court on Sept. 11-12 at the Tiger/Jynx Invitational in Winfield KS.
