Connor Blackard arrived a bit late, but the group welcomed him with cheers, expressing their joy that he had made it. The Discipleship Group, hosted by Chi Alpha, meets every Tuesday in room 213 on the second floor of the West Library.
Hosted by Chi Alpha missionaries Alicia Youngblood and Alyssa Streeter, the Discipleship Group encourages TxWes students to share their love of God and bring it to Texas Wesleyan. Streeter, the group’s founder, highlights what the Discipleship Group is and her inspiration for creating it.
“We meet together and read the word and talk about how we apply it to our lives and how we can live it out together and how we can love God,” Streeter said. “When I was a student in college, a similar group was created, and I saw Jesus become more real in life, and since then, I wanted to continue doing that; now I get to do this full time and watch others come alive in their faith.”
Students introduced themselves at the beginning of the study and then began their reading. Engaged participants shared their takes on the verses, their personal stories and how the verses relate to them.
Blackard, a first-year business major, shared his experience with the Discipleship Group.
“I think our interactions are pretty good, and we all have fun and laugh, know each other pretty well, and are a really good community,” Blackard said. “Hearing what others have to say, because everyone else has their own stories and opinions and thoughts, may make you think of things you didn’t notice.”
First-year psychology major Alicia Lerma discussed ways she can share the teachings with other students and how comfortable she feels going to these Bible studies.
“It can be by sharing like a testimony or talking to some friends that didn’t come to the D group today that I can tell them what I learned,” Lerma said. “Yes, I do feel comfortable going to these studies because they’re really nice people, and it just feels like I have a community.”
As the Discipleship Group was finishing up, they prayed for each other’s safe travels and for everyone to return safely. They then went around and said what they were thankful for.
Streeter welcomes all students to join the Discipleship Group to share their love of God. “Everyone is welcome, we do pursue the Lord together so if anyone is looking for a community to do that or just trying to figure that out, maybe you’re not a believer yet, you are more than welcome to come,” Streeter said.
“When I was a student attending D group, I found that I was encouraged to actually live out my faith. I came alive knowing who Jesus is and how God created who I was meant to be. I hope the student that comes finds encouragement,” she said.
